Intern in Environmental Management at WARIDI
The Tanzania Water Resources Integration Development Initiative (WARIDI) is a key activity of USAID/Tanzania which seeks to achieve improvements in health, water resources management, agriculture, climate change adaptation and environmental conservation in Tanzania. It also has a strong focus on Gender Integration and Youth Inclusion (GIYI). The five-year WARIDI activity promotes state of the art approaches in the management of water-related resources and services in up to 20 Local Government Authorities (LGAs) of the Rufiji and Wami-Ruvu river basins through three integrated components/intermediate results:
a. Increase utilization of sustainable multiple-use water and sanitation services;
b. Strengthened Governance for Sustainable and Resilient Management of Water Resources and Services under a changing climate;
c. Increase livelihoods through private sector investment opportunities for sustainable water services and resource management;
Experience
Good writing and analytical skills, proven ability in working with multidisciplinary teams on multidisciplinary projects such as WARIDI that integrates water, climate change, livelihoods and gender and youth inclusions Working-level English and fluent Kiswahili. Ability to travel extensively in remote and underserved areas of Morogoro, Iringa, Njombe, Mbeya and possibly Coastal region
Skills
Adopt best environmental practices based on USAID principles and guidelines on environmental management in order to ensure that environmental damage is kept to a minimum and environmental benefits are maximized. One of such principles is the Environmental Sound Design and Management (ESDM) that needs to be integrated in the programming and operations of WARIDI activities.
Education:
Bachelor’s degree or equivalent qualification on environmental sciences and or management, environmental engineers, Environmental economics and natural resources management from recognized universities.
Responsibilities:
The intern will (in concert with the WARIDI Climate Change Adaptation Specialist and other WARIDI staff as needed) undertake the following tasks:
1. Read all the relevant USAID and GoT environmental principles and guidelines to familiarize with the same
2. Review relevant WARIDI Project documents (progress reports-monthly, quarterly, annual and CCA study reports) to familiarize with WARIDI activities but also identify and document environmental best practices in line with USAID and GoT principles and guidelines reference above.
3. As appropriate, contact relevant project staff (e.g. under water supply, sanitation, governance and CC and livelihoods and private sector teams) to learn more about project activities and identify best environmental practices from their teams’ operations.
4. Review WARIDPs Year 4 Work Plan to identify areas leading to and or requiring environmental compliance
5. Create a data base showing the various WARIDI activities and their corresponding environmental performance status and activities/ areas that requires periodic follow up.
6. In consultation with respective project teams conduct field visits to selected project sites to assess environmental performance in connection with the requirements of the USAID, GoT and WARIDI EMMP and document relevant observations in the environmental database
7. Assist as needed in conducting environmental training to staff and partners (e.g. grantees, LGAs and BWBs)
8. Use data and information from the environmental data base and field visits to update the WARIDI EMMP as well as contribute to monthly, quarterly and annual reports.
9. In addition to the environment portfolio, the intern will also be expected to provide support on any other WARIDI activities as may be requested by staff from other WARIDI portfolios.
Deliverables
Based on the tasks above, the intern is expected to produce the following deliverables:
– Documentation of best environmental performance of WARIDI activities
– An active database showing environmental performance status and activities/ areas that requires periodic tracking
– Updated EMMP and inputs on Environmental compliance sections of the weekly, monthly, quarterly and annual report reports
– Training reports from environmental training for WARIDI staff and partners
Duration of the assignment
This assignment is for the period of one year (1) including 3-months of probation period.
