Position: Project Coordinator
Duration: 1 year, followed by review with possibility to extend
Location: Field sites in villages adjacent to Rungwa-Kizigo-Muhesi Game Reserves, STEP main
office in Iringa
Description: STEP is seeking a project coordinator to implement community conservation projects to
enhance human-elephant coexistence, human livelihoods, and elephant conservation in villages
adjacent to the Rungwa-Kizigo-Muhesi Game Reserves in Tanzania. The project coordinator will be
responsible for coordinating and leading all project activities; working closely with a wide range of
partners including communities, local CBOs, Regional and District Government; as well as project
communications, project monitoring and reporting, and budget management. The successful
candidate must be willing to spend the majority of their time in the field.
Responsibilities and activities will include:
- Preparing schedules, timeframes, budgets, and work protocols for project activitie
- Creating and maintaining comprehensive project documentation, plans, and reports for internal and external purposes
- Coordinating office- and field-based project personnel to assist with project implementation and activities
- Several weeks per month in the field to implement project activities
- Communicating and developing relationships with stakeholders, partners, and Government authorities
- Managing funds and keeping organized records of all project expenses
- Supporting formation, registration, operation, capacity building, and close monitoring of Community-Based Organizations (CBOs) and Village Savings and Loans Associations (VSLAs) with farmers groups
- Working closely with communities and CBOs to implement and monitor human-elephant coexistence interventions, including beehive fences, PICS bags, elephant-proof food stores, chilli briquettes, VSLAs etc.
- Working closely with farmers groups to implement income-generating activities, including assisting farmers groups with marketing and sale of elephant-friendly honey
- Acting as a liaison and advisor to farmers groups
- Developing educational materials and coordinating and delivering environmental education activities, workshops and events, including organizing a football league.
- Monitoring and evaluation of project progress, problem solving
- Fundraising including writing grant applications, networking with donors, and facilitating donor visits to projects
- Representing STEP at meetings, conferences, workshops, and other official functions
- Procurement of project equipment
- Other tasks as assigned by the supervisor
- Postgraduate qualification: Minimum Bachelor’s or equivalent degree in community development,natural resources conservation, education or similar degree
- Minimum of 3 years of experience in community conservation or development projects
- Strong written and oral communication skills in Swahili and English
- Excellent knowledge of MS Office
- Excellent communication skills, including ability to engage with wide range of partners from farmers to Government officials
- Track record of working effectively with communities including conducting village and community meetings and calm conflict resolution
- Passion for and proven ability to conduct fieldwork in rural areas for extended periods
- Ability to work independentlyPassion for community conservation
- Preferred attributes of successful candidate:
- Managerial experience in community conservation or development
- Knowledge of Community-Based Organizations, Village Savings and Loans Associations, financial skills training, income-generating activities, and beekeeping
- Strong experience in Monitoring and Evaluation and report writing
- Experience with education, awareness-raising, workshops and event organization
- Driver’s and/or motorcycle licence
- Familiarity with project landscape
Salary will be based on experience and come with all standard benefits of a 12-month contract.
Interviews will be held at STEP offices in Iringa during January 2019. The successful candidate must
be able to start in February 2019.
